Tip
Cockpit Identify lets drivers and warehouse workers scan a barcode on any load to instantly see which Tour it belongs to.
Orbit Cockpit includes an Identify function that allows users to point their camera at a barcode on a package and immediately view the associated Tour, its stops, and all loads. This is useful in warehouse and yard scenarios where a worker needs to quickly answer the question: "Where does this package go?"
Identify is a read-only feature: it displays information but does not update any statuses or trigger any actions. It works independently of any tour and can be used at any time.
Key highlights
Tour it belongs to, including stops and all LoadsLoad: a custom property value such as an NVE/SSCC number, a load reference, or a descriptionIdentify uses the camera on the driver's device to scan a barcode containing an Orbit Resource Number (ORN), a unique identifier that Orbit assigns to resources such as loads, shipments, and tours. When a valid ORN is scanned, Cockpit resolves it and displays the corresponding Tour details.
Barcodes that do not contain an ORN are matched against the loads themselves. Cockpit Identify compares the scanned value against each Load's custom property values (for example an NVE or SSCC number stored on the load), its load reference, and its description. The tours already loaded on the device are searched first, followed by all Tours of your carrier, so a package can be identified even when its label carries only the shipper's own numbering.
There are two ways to use Identify:
A. From within the Cockpit Drivers App:
Tap the more menu (three dots icon) in the bottom navigation bar
Tap Identify Load
Point the camera at a barcode on a package to scan it
B. From the built-in Camera App on any Phone:
If your labels contain QR codes generated through Orbit's Document Engine, you can scan them with your phone's built-in camera app or any barcode reader. This opens Cockpit directly in the Identify view and displays the resolved Tour information. There is no need to navigate through the app first.
When a barcode is scanned, Cockpit extracts the ORN and looks up the associated Tour. A result card appears below the viewfinder showing the Tour details.
The result card displays:
Warning
If the scanned barcode identifies a specific load, that load is highlighted at the top of the loads list. The remaining loads on the Tour are shown below it.
If the scanned barcode identifies a shipment or tour, all stops and loads on the Tour are displayed without highlighting.
Only Tours that the App User has permission to see will be resolved.
If the scanned value matches more than one Load, for example when two loads share the same reference, Cockpit Identify shows a list of the matching loads and their Tours. Select the load that matches your package to open its result card, or cancel to dismiss the list.
Each scan during a session adds a new card to a horizontal carousel. You can swipe left and right between cards to review previously scanned items. Pagination dots below the cards indicate your position in the list. The session history is cleared when you leave the Identify screen.
Tip
To dismiss a card, swipe it up or down. Dismissed items can be scanned again.
The Identify scanner reads the following barcode formats:
For the most reliable identification, we recommend encoding Orbit Resource Numbers as QR codes on your labels.
| Situation | Message |
|---|---|
| The scanned value does not match any load or tour | Not Found: "No matching load or tour found. Check that the tour is synced and assigned to you." |
| The scanned code is not an Orbit barcode | Invalid Barcode: "The scanned code is not a valid Orbit format" |
| You do not have access to the scanned resource | No Access: "You don't have access to this information. Please contact your dispatcher." |
| The lookup could not reach the server | Lookup Failed: "Couldn't reach the server. Check your connection and try again." |
Orbit's Document Engine supports generating QR codes that link directly to Cockpit Identify. When creating label templates, you can use the generateLoadDeepLink filter to produce a deep link URL for any load. Combined with a QR code renderer, this embeds a scannable code on each label that opens Cockpit Identify when scanned.
Note
Real World Example:
A warehouse worker at Orion Industries in Paris receives a delivery of mixed pallets. Several packages need to be sorted onto different vehicles for onward transport. The worker picks up a package, scans the QR code on the label with their phone camera, and Cockpit Identify opens showing that the package belongs to Tour TUR-2024-087, scheduled for delivery to ACME Ltd in Tokyo. The worker places the package on the correct vehicle and moves on to the next one.
No. Identify is read-only. It displays Tour and load information but does not change any load statuses or trigger any tour actions.
Identify supports QR Code, Code 128, and Data Matrix formats. A barcode containing an Orbit Resource Number (ORN) resolves directly; any other value is matched against your carrier's loads by custom property value, load reference, and description.
Cockpit Identify shows a list of the matching loads and their Tours. Select the correct load to open its result card.
Yes. Identify works for any Tour that belongs to your carrier, regardless of whether you are the assigned driver.
If the barcode was already scanned during the current session and the card is still visible, the carousel scrolls to the existing card instead of creating a duplicate.
No. Identify is exclusive to Orbit Cockpit.
